Tom Jones, USA »Noixga«
NOIXGA is the Ho Chunk word for the Black Ash tree. The Ho Chunk have traditionally used black ash trees for their baskets. The Emerald Ash Borer is now threatening the ash trees. It arrived from Asia in cargo ships or airplanes. Since 2002 it has killed 20 million ash trees in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. It appeared 40 miles south of the Wisconsin-Illinois border and threatens 1/3 of the WI trees. This sculptural installation incorporates photography, Ho Chunk basketry, and Ash trees to create a meditative place for the viewer to contemplate the idea of Native/Invasive.
